So, You’re Trying Paragliding in Manali for the First Time?

There’s a particular kind of nervous excitement that hits the moment you stand at the edge of the takeoff point in Solang Valley, harness buckled, the entire Kullu valley spread out below you. If you’ve never flown before, you probably have questions — is it safe, what does it actually feel like, what should you wear, and how much will it cost?

This guide walks you through exactly what happens, start to finish, when you book your first tandem flight with Indian Para Association (IPA) in Manali.

Before You Book: What Makes Manali Ideal for First-Timers

Manali, and specifically the Solang Valley launch site, is one of the most beginner-friendly paragliding destinations in India because of:

  • Gentle, predictable wind patterns for most of the year
  • Short drive from the takeoff point to landing zone, minimising logistics stress
  • A long flying season — mid-September through mid-July
  • Certified tandem pilots who handle 100% of the flying so you can simply enjoy it

What Actually Happens on Flight Day

1. Arrival & Check-In

You’ll check in at the IPA counter (Counter-11, Near Green Tax Barrier, Kalath, Manali). Staff will confirm your package, collect basic details, and do a quick weight and fitness check — flights are generally suited for ages 10 and above, subject to pilot assessment and weather.

2. Safety Briefing

Your pilot will walk you through the harness, how to run at takeoff, body position during flight, and how landing works. This takes a few minutes and is straightforward even if you’re nervous.

3. Gear-Up

You’ll be fitted with a harness and helmet. Wear closed-toe shoes (sneakers or trekking shoes), and layer up — it gets noticeably colder and windier at altitude than it feels on the ground.

4. Takeoff

This is the part everyone worries about, and it’s over in seconds. You and your pilot run a few steps downhill together as the wing fills with air and lifts you off the ground. Most first-timers say the actual moment of leaving the ground is far gentler than they expected.

5. The Flight

Once airborne, your pilot controls everything. You’ll glide silently over pine forests, the Beas river, and snow-dusted ridgelines depending on the season. This is the part people come back for.

6. Landing

Your pilot will guide you in for landing in a designated open field, with simple instructions (usually just “lift your legs” as you come in).

  • A fully charged phone if you want IPA to capture you flying in (or book the Prime package for included GoPro footage)

Is It Safe? Here’s How IPA Approaches Safety

  • All flights are flown by certified tandem pilots
  • Equipment (wings, harnesses, reserve systems) meets international safety standards
  • Every flight includes a pre-flight weather check — flights are postponed, not pushed through, in unsafe conditions
  • A safety briefing is mandatory before every single flight, regardless of package

Common First-Timer Questions

Will I feel sick or dizzy? Most people don’t. Paragliding is a smooth glide, not a fast or jerky ride — there’s no stomach-drop sensation like a rollercoaster.

What if I’m scared of heights? Many of IPA’s flyers say paragliding feels different from looking down off a building — because you’re moving steadily and supported the whole time, the fear response is often much milder than expected.

Can I fly if I’ve never done any adventure sport before? Yes. Tandem flights require zero prior experience — your pilot does all the flying.

What’s the minimum age? Generally 10 years and above, subject to pilot assessment and weather conditions on the day.

Thinking Beyond Your First Flight?

If your first tandem flight leaves you wanting more, IPA also runs structured pilot training:

  • P1 Course (Beginner) – ₹21,000 — ground handling, basic launch/landing, 6 hours training
  • P2 Course (Intermediate) – ₹39,000 — controlled turns, thermalling basics, 12 hours training
  • P3 Course (Advanced) – ₹59,000 — cross-country navigation, weather planning, 20+ hours flying
